Teaching Your Kids How to Take Their Thoughts Captive.

If you have any form of social media, or have even had a moment in front of the T.V. within the last week you have learned about a made up demonic creature named Momo. As you know the person behind the scene of this made up creature, is not targeting adults or really even teens but young children. Teaching them horrible things and more than anything putting a sense of fear with in their fragile little hearts.

Now my husband I decided about four years ago that social media was not healthy for our girls at such a young age. However, I allow my girls to share my social media with me. They log on and scroll every now and again. Last week when the news flooded my facebook page about this thing named momo, my girls were horrified and could NOT believe someone would do this. Well lets discuss who the true enemy is here for one sec. the TRUE enemy is not the person doing it, nevertheless the devil himself. Weaving his way into our homes, in a crafty little fashion. So crafty that parents are sitting right next to their kids and not even realizing what is being poured over their little hearts and minds. Crafty enough that just an image can overflow them with fear and anxiety.

The Bible tells us that the spirit of fearfulness does not come from God, instead God gives us power, love, and a sound mind. In other words, God has given us a spirit of love and of a calm and well balanced mind! So lets give credit where credit is due. The enemy has shown his ugly little face to so many little kids, teens, and parents around the globe and most of them can not sleep at night because of the words they have heard come across their screens. Maybe like my girls they only caught a glimpse of the creature. Truth be told the enemy has once again gotten his way into our homes through our precious devices.

I knew once my youngest daughter saw “this thing” she wouldn’t be able to sleep. She has always been a little scaredy cat at night. Well truth be told that’s exactly what happen. At 1:00 in the morning she came in my room and woke me up being that she was scarred and could not sleep due to the fact this disgusting image was stuck in her head. She said, “Mama I have been laying in bed for two hours, trying to fall asleep, but I keep thinking of that picture.”  I give God the praise and glory that I could even think straight in this moment. I took her hand and prayed with her, and told her that the spirit of fearfulness is NOT from God.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness but one of power, love and a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

I am thankful for the homeschooling curriculum that both of my girls use, each week they have a new memory verse. In this moment at 1:00 in the morning those Scriptures came in handy. I told Elizabeth God has given her these verses for such as times as this. I asked her if she could remember any, she said she could. I asked her to go back to bed and think of as many scriptures as she possibly could and keep repeating them over and over until she falls asleep.”

This was a moment, a teachable moment to cultivate her heart. This moment was meant to teacher her to take her thoughts captive and replace them with words of truth and not words of lies and images of death. A few days later Lizzie said to me that she really liked what I had taught her. I asked her what she was talking about. She said, ” You know mama, to say those verses, I can fall right asleep now.” PRAISE GOD!! He is Faithful!

What are some things you can do to teach your kids to take their thoughts captive if they have been frightened? Here are some things that are helpful for my family and I pray you can implement them to your kids. Perhaps you may need them in your own life.

Talk to your kids about these 4 Questions they can ask themselves in the midst of worry.

  1. Where is this thought coming from? (Is it real or imagined)
  2. Where is this thought taking me? (To Worry? To fear? To Prayer?)
  3. Will this thought draw me closer to God? (Does it align with scripture?)
  4. Can I do anything about this problem, concern or worry?

Teach them these 3 actions they can take.

  1. When an unpure thought or worry comes to mind QUICKLY say, NO! Say it out loud if you have to.
  2. Move on to something meaningful, get your mind busy doing something with your hands.
  3. MOST importantly. Say Scripture Out loud! Yell it if you have too!

Scripture above all else is essential for fighting thoughts that cause fear and anxiety. When Jesus was being tempted in the wilderness He used the very word of God to fight the enemy. The Word of God is supreme above anything the enemy can put before us! Even this demonic Momo creature streaming across our computer screens, phones, and T.V’s. Our God is bigger! He is supreme over all.

“For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [FIX YOUR MINDS ON THEM].” Philippians 4:8 AMPC

Mama’s use this time of madness to cultivate the hearts of your kids. What the enemy is trying to use for harm; take it and use it for God’s ultimate glory. Make God the center of it! Praying for each of you now!
